The place we today call "Europe´s Balcony", located in Nerja, used to be an Arabic fortress in the IX century.
After the war with the Moors in the XV century a new tower was added. In the year 1810 British marines attacked Nerja and they partially destroyed Nerja as well as a large part of the fortress. Later in 1884 Nerja was struck by an earthquake that caused tremendous damage.
In January 1885, King Alfonso XII visited the area around Nerja that was struck by the earthquake. Just before he departed he named this place "Europe´s balcony".
Today, Europe´s balcony is a must see place when you come to Nerja on a vacation. Just her views are the most beautiful panoramas of the Costa del Sol. If you look south on a sunny day you can see the mountains in Africa, to the East the cliffs and bays, such as Maro´s beach. To the west you can see the Torrox light house and the coastline that stretches to Malaga.
The Balcony of Europe is famous for its sunsets and sunrises.
At the end of a pretty and clean, palm tree lined boulevard you will find Europe´s balcony. The square has lots of benches and binoculars to have a good look around its surroundings.
