Flying from and to Malaga

If you fly to Malaga you will arrive at the airport of the AENA group which Malaga Airport is part off, it the group comprises of 47 airports and 2 heliports.

You can find actual depart and arrival times on the AENA website as well as any delays.
Malaga Airport, also known as Aeropuerto de Malaga-Costa del Sol, is the most southerly airport of mainland Europe, just 8 kilometers south-east of the capital of the Malaga province and with easy access to the A7 Coastal highway.

The airport was established in 1919 and today the day 12.000.000 (2010/2011) travellers pass through, most of them from Great Britain.

In March 2010 the new T3 terminal was opened, besides this further renovation works have been executed such as enlarging the parking, 20 new boarding gates, renovation of the train- and bus station, etc.

Terminal T3 is connected to terminal T2 and has no less than 86 check-in desks, 15 self-billing machines, 9 security checkpoints that give access to a large shopping area. The arrivals hall has 11 baggage belts and 1 belt for exceptional baggage. The new baggage handling system SATE (Sistema Automatizado de Tratamiento de Equipajes) has the capacity to process 7.500 bags per hour.

After the official opening of the new T3 terminal the airport continues with its extensions in order to reach a maximum capacity of 35.000.000 passengers per year.

The airport is also trying to improve its infrastructure with new access routes to the motorway, a connection with the A7 in the south and in the near future a ring road in the north of Malaga.

Flying

Malaga Airport collaborates with big airlines such as: Air Berlin, Alitalia, British Airways, Iberia, Ryanair, Transavia, etc, which gives it access to larger airports/cities in Europe such as Barcelona, Madrid, Brussels, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Moscow, Paris, Zurich, etc

Check-in

In general the airlines at the airport have the following guidelines when it comes to check-in:

  • Time limit: you can often check in up to 45 minutes before your flight departs. As it can be busy or changes can be made it is recommendable to get to the airport at least 2 hours prior to departure.
  • Automatic check in: nowadays many airlines recommend automatic check in. U can check in via their website or at special auto check-in desks at the airport. The machines print boarding passes and the labels for your luggage. If you use the automatic check in online you will need to print off you boarding pass that has a barcode which is only valid for the automatic and the "normal" check-in desks.
  • Admitted hand luggage: on European flights the airlines allow hand luggage that is often limited to the following specifications: Max 10 kg. weight and a size of 55x40x20cm, 1 per passenger incl. handbags, suitcases, laptops etc. It is often permitted to bring liquids in special 100ml packaging, but only if they are in re-sealable bags (maximum size of re-sealable bag is 1 liter, size about 20x20cm)
  • Luggage and suitcases: depending on the airline, the maximum weight of your suitcase may be 10,15 or 20 kilo. For every kilo you are overweight you will have to pay extra, often the price is around the 20 Euro/Kilo. Suitcases may not weigh more than 32 kilos and not be more than 81 cm high and 119cm wide due to health and safety of airline personnel.
  • Required travel documents: for international European flights (Schengen countries) a valid passport (underage up to 16 years of age may travel on a parents passport as long as they are present) or a valid identity card. For some locations you also need to bring a birth certificate if you travel with children younger than 16 years of age. No document may be damaged or expired.
  • Reserving seats: Some airlines allow you to reserve your seat in advance during the online auto-check in. This is especially for passengers that require wider seating space due to their height or weight.
