AVE = Alta Velocidad Española. Trains that can reach a speed of 350 km/hr. The AVE station in Malaga is in the central station "Maria Zambrano", in the center of Malaga. There are direct connections between Malaga-Madrid and Malaga-Barcelona.
The Malaga-Madrid line stops in Antequera, Puente Genil, Córdoba and Madrid "Puerta de Atocha". The total length is 513 kilometer and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. For about 100 euros you can go to Madrid and back from Malaga with the AVE. Prices depend on availability and season.
The Malaga-Barcelona line has stops in Antequera, Puente Genil, Córdoba, Zaragoza, Tarragona, Barcelona Sants. The total journey takes about 5 hours and 40 minutes, costing 150 euros (return). Prices depend on availability and season.
There are various services in the AVE such as a cafeteria, daily newspapers, music, film, restaurant, even special menus for vegetarians or adjusted meals according to religion or diets such as diabetic, glutton free, saltless, vegetarian, veggie, children's menu, lactose free, Muslim, etc. You do need to request a special menu in advance.
There are several classes available in the AVE such as Tourist mesa (tourist class), Preferente and" is inclusive the extra services such as restauration and entrance to the "Sala Club Ave" (before departure), daily newspaper and a magazine.

Renfe offers various discounts for i.e.: 20% return discount, family discount, gold card (travellers that are 60 years of age and older), youth discount (for youngsters between 14 and 26 years of age) etc.
Spain is the second country with the larges high speed train network (2230km in 2010), just below the Chinese network. The French were the only ones experimenting the high speed trains for a long time, the TGV (Trén á Grande Vitesse), and have a record in their name of the highest speed with tourists of 574.8km/hr in 2007. Although today the day, the speeds of the daily routes don't exceed 320km/hr, similar to the speeds in Spain.
Unfortunately you cannot go to Nerja or Torrox by train from Malaga airport. You can catch the train to Malaga central station and from there you can catch a bus to Nerja or Torrox.
Trains go from 7.03 in the morning till 00.03 at night from the airport to the central station in Malaga.
