Torrox Costa

Torrox Costa, located at the Spanish Costa del Sol, at only 30 minutes from Málaga Airport. Torrox Costa is part of Torrox pueblo, located a little more up the hill.

At the lighthouse of Torrox Costa you will find the remains of the Roman settlement Caviclum.

The lighthouse of Torrox Costa dates back to the year 1864 and is 39m high (from the sea) and 26m (from the ground). The lighthouse gives out 4 light signals every 15 seconds which should reach 20 sea-miles. The lighthous of Torrox is one of the 6 lighthouses located in the province of Málaga.

The archaeological site Caviclum at the Lighthouse of Torrox is set to one of the most important archaeological sites of the province of Malaga.

The Roman ruins date back from the first to the fourth century A.C. The archaeological excavations confirm that this Roman town was an important production and export for the fisheries and agriculture. The Roman village was discovered in the early 1905 while realizing renovation work at the Lighthouse of Torrox. The part which you see today is composed of several rooms around a small atrium with impulvium (small water tank to collect rainwater). The floors where decorated with mosaics of which some remains are preserved. These mosaics are very rare to be found in such a excellent state of preservation. Some of them represent figures of deities and animals. A few of these mosaicsare exposed in the museum of Málaga and Barcelona.
