4 blue flags for Nerja´s beaches this year!

Blue flags: The Blue Flag is a trademark owned by FEE which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, consisting of 65 organisations in 60 member countries in Europe, Africa, Oceania, Asia, North America and South America.

Malaga has received this year 30 Blue Flags for their beaches of which 4 are located in Nerja: Burriana, Torrecilla, El Playazo and Maro beach.

In total there are 93 blue flag- beaches in Andalusia, 14.3% more than last year.

A blue flag is sought for beaches and marinas as an indication of their high quality and  environmental  standards.

Day of the Cherry – 23th of June 2012

For those who like Cherries, definitely should visit the day of the Cherry in Alfarnate celebrated the 23th of June 2012 (when we know the exact dates this will be published on our website). The event starts at 11.00 o´clock in the morning and is tradition since 2006.

day of the cherryThere will be about 1600 kilos of cherries been given away! Thousands of visitors come to this event in Alfarnate. An enormous tent is put up where different producers of the area offer their products at affordable prices. Of course, everything can be tasted for free!

During this day there are musical and folkloric performances to entertain the visitors that come to the fiesta. Besides the cherries you can taste and buy, you can also try traditional local dishes such as “sopa cachorreña” or “olla”, etc

Alfarnate is located at less then an hour drive from Torrox and is easy reached by taking the A7 in direction of Velez Malaga, at Velez Malaga take the A-356 in direction Vélez-Málaga/Viñuela/Colmenar/Zafarraya.

 

Day of the Snail ( Dia del Caracol) 3rd of June 2012 Riogordo

During the day of the Snail, the town hall of Riogordo serves their visitors a total of about 350 kilograms of cooked snail in sauce (Caracol en caldo). Last year about 5000 people have visited this popular event of Riogordo.

This snail is a land snail typical in the Axarquia (Andalusia) and is prepared the traditional way and served to all visitors for free with olives, beer and or local wine.

During this day you can also see dance shows, street musicians. There are also prices to win.

Together with this festival another event is celebrated in Riogordo: Feria de ganado, a 3 day during cattle fair based on the ancient custom of muleteers to buy and sell their animals.

Riogordo is a white village situated on the borders of the Mountains of Málaga (Axarquía), at 55km of Nerja. This village received its name because of the River of the Cave (Río de la cueva)

From apartments Calaceite it is very easy to access Riogordo, follow the A7 towards Velez Malaga and then take the mountain road towards Colmenar.

Day of Medlar Sayalonga

The 6th of May 2012 the town of Sayalonga will  celebrate their annual Day of Medlar (Día del Nispero)

Nispero, also called Medlar, was imported from the Orient many centuries ago. One of the most imporant places of Spain regarding the production of the medlar is the area that surrounds the village of Sayalonga.

During this festival, celebrated in the middle of the harvest season of the Medlar,  thouseands of kilo´s of this special fruit will be eaten, accomanied by local wine and a spirit made of Medlar.
At the stage put ip on the main square there are performances of “rondallas”, which are ancient dances, and performances of  dancers who dance “fandangos” and “sevillanas”.

This important day also includes  free tastings of products derived from this fruit as jam and medlar liquor, and other typical local products such as wine. Also the “golden Medlar”will be handed over to the best Medlar producer of Andalusia.

Sayalonga is at only a few minutes drive from our apartments in Torrox.
