Despite the decrease in requests for moorings due to the current situation, there will be a noticeable increase in the deficit in the eastern zone due to two large projects in the province of Malaga, specifically in Torrox and San Andrés in the capital city. These two projects will cause a deficit of around 1100 berths.

In addition, the Puertos de Andalucía (Port of Andalusia) Public Agency (APPA) in Benalmádena is running other projects in the bays of Vélez, Fuengirola, Estepona and La Bajadilla, which will provide an extra 2980 moorings for the province of Málaga.

An investment of 24.2 million Euros is being made in these projects and 24 months have been set aside to complete the work.

Axarquía

In Torrox, the port that is to be constructed on the boundary between this district andNerja, with 508 moorings, has received environmental approval. This was recently confirmed to SUR by the Delegate for the Environment, Remedios Martel.

The report suggests that the most suitable place is the beach of Vílchez in Torrox. This means the rejection of the other two possible locations, one in the area of El Playazo in Nerja and another further to the east, near Calaceite, also in Torrox. This is a very high-key project for the local governments of both districts and for the business and tourism sectors on the Axarquía coast, but the environmental impact assessment had to be carried out before the project could be continued. This assessment had been pending for more than a year and a half.

Now that it has been completed, it now falls to the Puertos de Andalucía (Ports of Andalusia) Public Agency (APPA) to carry on with the project. The Government of Andalusia has made a commitment to start the work before the end of their term of government; by the year 2011.

The Andalusian chain Fuerte Hoteles has taken the plunge into the holiday apartment business. They will be opening the brand new Calaceite residential complex that they have developed in Torrox. The inauguration is imminent, and will take place as soon as the legalities for obtaining permits to operate around 30 of the 198 units that make up the estate as holiday apartments have been finalised, explained yesterday José Luque, the chain’s managing director.

The properties are completely furnished and totally equipped, and are aimed at the sector of families that travel with children. For this sector, it works out cheaper to stay at an apartment than in a hotel room. Luque went on to say that this development is aimed both at the Spanish and Dutch markets.

The Fuerte Calaceite holiday apartments are located in unbeatable surroundings in Torrox. This district has the distinct privilege of having the best climate in Europe, and the interior design of the apartments revolves around the use of light and clarity.

10/02/2009. Council creates conditions for essential improvements to hotel infrastructure in La Axarquía to encourage the tourism sector

Alonso meets with mayors and entrepreneurs from the district for the launch of a plan that will invest more than 40 million

The Andalusian Council member for Tourism, Commerce and Sport, Luciano Alonso, stated today that it is "essential and necessary" to improve hotel infrastructure in La Anarquía to encourage tourists to visit this district of Malaga. He also remarked that hotels with four or five stars and other unique establishments should be built alongside the three star facilities that currently exist.

Alonso made this statement after holding a meeting today with around 50 political and business representatives from the district of La Axarquía to launch the Costa del Sol-Axarquía Sustainable Tourism Initiative (STI), towards which the Council will provide 24 million euros out of the 43.6 million to be invested.

This is the slogan that this district took to the Madrid International Tourism Fair (FITUR) this year.

The aim is simply to attempt to do away with the seasonal nature of tourism and to show that it is an attractive district, not only during the summer months when its beaches and sunshine guarantee a mass influx of visitors, but also during the spring, autumn and winter seasons.

19/01/2009. The El Fuerte Group hands over the first phase of its residential complex in Torrox

Calaceite Residencial
Calaceite Residencial

The El Fuerte Group has handed over the first phase of its Calaceite residential complex, located between Torrox and Nerja. Vistamar has a total of 198 properties, of which 157 will be handed over to their owners from the 20th of January onwards.

65% of the new owners of the Vistamar properties are Spanish. The rest are a varied mixture of English, Irish, Belgium, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian citizens. The vast majority of these property owners have acquired these apartments as a second home, attracted by the excellent leisure options available in the surrounding area. The properties are right on the beachfront, they have spectacular sea views and a great location just a few minutes away from Torrox Costa and Nerja, 35 minutes away from Malaga's international airport and railway station and 90 minutes from the Sierra Nevada.

Another factor that persuaded these property owners to choose a home in Calaceite is the climate. It is well-known that Torrox has the best climate in Europe; a place where it is possible to enjoy sunny days and mild temperatures practically all year round. As an additional bonus, the Sierra Tejada, Almaza and Almijara Natural Park can be found close to Calaceite, where nature lovers are in their element and mountain sports can be enjoyed.

The El Fuerte Group has invested 50 million euros in this development, and is currently making further investments in the construction of the second phase, Las Lomas. The apartments that are being handed over at the moment have 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, large terraces, sea views, landscaped areas and swimming pools. Everything is constructed from materials of the highest quality.

For the future, there is also a project in place for an 18 hole golf course at Calaceite, designed by Blake Stirling from Global Golf.  As well as all this, it should be added that future plans to construct a marina very close to this development have already been approved by the Andalusia Council. This port will have 500 moorings so that lovers of the high sea who live in Calaceite can enjoy their yachts as much as possible.

El Fuerte Group

The company that backs this project is the El Fuerte Group. This long established company has more than 50 years of experience in the tourism sector, and owns six hotel establishments in Andalusia. Year after year, the El Fuerte Group keeps winning various prizes and awards that accredit their professionalism, their quality and their respect for the environment. The people who buy property at Calaceite will also benefit from services and discounts offered by the hotel group.

11/07/2008: La Junta (Autonomous Government of Andalusia) committed to pushing forward tourist projects in la Axarquía

Source: www.sur.es

Minister Luciano Alonso meets the mayors of Vélez, Nerja, Torrox and Algarrobo to consider their demands: a marina, new golf courses and objectives.

«A positive attitude which is receptive, open to dialogue and committed to getting the Region's largest projects off the ground». These were the words of Torrox's Councillor for Tourism, José Pérez (PSA), regarding the attitude shown by the Minister for Tourism, Luciano Alonso, towards the future of tourism in la Axarquía, after a meeting in the capital with the mayors of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla (PP); Nerja, José Alberto Armijo (PP); and Algarrobo, Natacha Rivas (PA). The meeting was the first held by the leaders of the province's easternmost coastal towns after the naming of Alonso as the Minister for Tourism.

«He has committed himself to looking into all of the projects and definitely feels empathy for the Region. We cannot continue being the western Costa del Sol's 'poor cousin'», stated Pérez, who explained that the meeting came about after last December's announcement by the Andalusian president, Manuel Chaves, regarding the 4,000 million Euro investment in western Costa del Sol. This investment plan, linked to Qualifica, saw demands from la Axarquía, which has created a forum for Tourist Development within the area. José Pérez, as spokesman, reiterated that the Junta had already announced that the Plan for Sustainable Tourism was «the only way» to achieve financing for new projects.

«We are waiting for the projects we have sent from the 31 municipalities within the Region to be specified by the whole Community - this is the information we have from the Junta», explained Torrox's town councillor, adding that pending projects were discussed in yesterday's meeting with Alonso, including the projected marina between Nerja and Torrox. «He has promised to ease the process and consult the relevant Ministries», clarified Pérez.

Future Marina

With regard to the new golf courses -including that planned for Nerja in the La Coladilla area, currently at a standstill because of differences in the criteria set out by the Junta and the Council-, Alonso announced that the Andalusian Administration «will be sensitive to the problems of each municipality, although always strictly adhering to the law».

As well as these questions, other projects relating to the improvement of tourist promotion and revitalisation of the beaches were discussed. The minister also committed himself to easing the processes pertaining to the Nerja purifier, which have suffered several decades of delays.

26/06/2008: Torrox Council plenary session approves the registration of the brand 'Torrox, the Best Climate in Europe", with the backing of a scientific study certifying the information

In a plenary session held by Torrox Council this morning, the brands 'Torrox' and 'Torrox, the Best Climate in Europe' have been approved, as a government team has recognised a scientifically verified study proving that no other place on the European continent enjoys better weather. The analysis presented in Malaga at the beginning of the month certifies that Torrox's geographical location gives it the unique position in Europe of "a combination of optimum meteorological variables, with gentle temperatures for most of the year, and little rain in winter". In the report, carried out by the Meteogroup Company with sponsorship from the business sector with Grupo El Fuerte, the Costa del Sol and Torrox were compared with 21 other Mediterranean coastal areas. Among the conclusions, it was highlighted that Torrox has a subtropical Mediterranean climate with an "average temperature of 18 degrees, with a difference between the coldest and hottest months of the year of only 11 degrees centigrade". What's more, what marks it out from other areas with a similar climate, like Marbella or La Valeta (Malta), "is that extreme temperatures are never registered, as in the period studied, in the last seven years, the maximum has been 31.8 degrees and the minimum 3.7 degrees, meaning there are neither frosts nor stifling heat".

Ferrara Beach
Ferrara Beach

The municipality in Axarquia has the highest absolute minimum temperature in the winter months and the lowest in summer, as well as having the third least rainfall of the towns studied at 54 days, behind only Almeria and San Javier (Murcia). Torrox is locked between the Mediterranean Sea and the closest to sea water 2,000 metre mountain range in the whole world, with peaks such as the La Maroma extremely close to the easternmost beaches of the Costa del Sol. For this reason, neither the extremely cold winter winds nor the excessively hot summer winds get through. It is this mountain range that guarantees water in spite of the scarce rainfall, as it is the setting for stormy weather which supplies the town and surrounding urban areas - one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe. The fact that Torrox boasts eight months with a gentle climate and four hot months is "favourable for promoting the area as a year-round tourist destination, which will be a goal now, along with the installation of new infrastructures", stated the Mayoress, Toñi Claros, during the presentation of the study.

Torrox
Torrox

Also in attendance along with the media was the Councillor for Tourism, Beaches and Marine Resources in Torrox, José Pérez, who today defended the study, which was designed to prove that "basically, with regard to climate, there is nowhere better than Torrox". The councillor highlighted that this qualitative study set out to prove "with statistical data that this was not just a slogan: it was in fact, the truth and will be promoted by the municipality to ensure that it is a leading destination". It was also pointed out that it was the ex-secretary of the Costa del Sol Hotel Association (Aehcos), Francisco Mena who was given the job of creating the slogan 'Torrox, the Best Climate in Europe'.

02/06/2008: Torrox is the place with the best climate in Europe, according to a climate study

The district of Torrox in the state of Malaga is the town with the best climate in Europe, according to a href="http://www.calaceiteresidencial.com/residential/files/noticias/ESTUDIO_CLIMATICO_en.pdf">climate study that was presented in Malaga today. Carried out by the company Metrogroup and sponsored by the El Fuerte group, this report compares the climate in Torrox to another 21 locations around the Mediterranean.

The study confirms that the climate in Torrox can be considered as the best in the Mediterranean from the tourism and residential points of view. This location show the best combination of climatic indices out of all the places studied, as well as the highest absolute minimum temperature in winter and the lowest absolute maximum temperature in summer. It is also the town with the third least number of days of precipitation per year.

For José Pérez, Torrox's town councillor for Tourism, Beaches and Agriculture, "this slogan is a very important resource for our town, as we continually organise publicity campaigns to demonstrate that you can live here all year round. It also helps to improve our economy and encourages people to come to Torrox to enjoy our landscapes in winter as well as summer".

Torrox enjoys this privilege due to the fact that it presents mild average temperature values throughout the year, in winter as well as summertime. The average annual temperature is 18º C, meaning that it enjoys warm winter months and cool summer months.

According to Salud Alonso, those responsible for Metrogroup's report, "the benevolent nature of Torrox's climate is certainly due to the area's geography. From one side, it is influenced by a mild maritime climate because it is open to the sea through the Torrox River Valley, and on the other it is surrounded by mountains which stop colder winds getting to the town.

During the study period, from 2001 to 2007, the maximum average temperature in the summer months did not rise above 27º C, whereas in other places along the Mediterranean coast like Almeria, Alicante, San Juan (Mallorca) and Valletta, the maximum average values were generally greater than 30º C.

With respect to the minimum temperatures, the average in winter is 10.2º C, a very pleasant minimum for the coldest month of the year. The minimum average annual temperature is 15º C, which means that Torrox has mild temperatures during night hours throughout the year, something that is especially welcome in summer months. Another factor that contributes to this district of Malaga being considered as the town with the best climate in Europe is that no below-zero temperatures have been registered between 2001 and 2007.

The lowest value recorded in Torrox during the entire period of study is 3.7ºC, the highest for all of the 21 locations included in the study. It is also in third place for the least amount of rainfall, just behind Almeria and San Javier (Murica), with an average of just 54 days per year. In any case, "Torrox has never suffered a shortage of water thanks to the rainfall that is registered in the surrounding hills. These rains often come in the form of thunderstorms and mean that water gets to Torrox through rivers and streams, an important one of which is the River Torrox. This situation means that the Las Viñuelas reservoir has enough capacity to supply the town without any problems", states Salud Alonso.

All these factors have come together to raise Torrox to the position of having the best climate in Europe, making it the perfect place to go on holiday as well as for living in all year round. The temperatures are mild in winter and the heat isn't suffocating in summer as the apparent temperature (the sensation that human beings feel depending on the ambient temperature and the wind), is the lowest throughout the summer months for all of the 22 cities that the report analyses.

Paco Mena, the ex secretary of the Costa del Sol Hotel Owner's Association (AEHCOS), was the person who came up with Torrox's slogan "the best climate in Europe". This was based on an article that Elena Villamana Peco had written for the Diario Sur in the year 1978 which argued that this town, in the district of Axarquía, had the best climate in Continental Europe.

26/04/2008: Diario SUR: The Government at Torrox has decided to change the location of the seawater spa project approved

The tripartite government at Torrox Council (IU, PSA, PIU) has plans to change the location of the seawater spa project, originally designed for a 30,000 square metre plot next to the Hotel Riu Ferrara. The Councillor for Beaches, José Pérez (PSA), yesterday explained that the aim is to avoid over-development of the area - in which parks, an auditorium and sports facilities will be placed- and take the spa to municipal land near Calaceite Beach.

«It's much closer to the sea. The golf course and projected future marina will go there», remarked the Councillor, who reiterated that this project comes from the previous corporation, which signed an agreement with the Ministry for Tourism, committing them to providing 120,000 Euros for preliminary studies. A private developer will provide the infrastructure via a franchise, at a cost of between six and seven million Euros. Pérez explained that this matter will go to a plenary proceeding next Thursday, and will later be taken to the local Government to request a renewal of the agreement.

15/04/2008: Grupo El Fuerte begins the second phase of homes in Calaceite, their residential complex in Torrox (Malaga) approved

On 31st March, contracts were signed with the Aldesa Company to start work on the second phase of 131 homes in Calaceite, 'Las Lomas'.

On the 31st March contracts were signed to begin work with the Aldesa Company, currently finishing work on the first phase, which will be ready for handover in December this year. In total, Grupo El Fuerte has to date already invested 87 million Euros in the construction of the Calaceite Residential Complex.

With a total of 131 apartments spread out over 3 plots, Las Lomas boasts exclusive penthouses and apartments with up to 3 bedrooms, all with spectacular sea views. Calaceite is beautifully located between Torrox and Nerja, near to Malaga Airport and the city itself, Granada and Sierra Nevada. The complex is perfect for those wishing to enjoy holidays or live there all year round. As well as the incredible coastal views, Calaceite is very near to the Sierra de la Axarquía, with its White Villages and hiking trails, making it the perfect place to enjoy both city and Nature just a stone's throw away from one other.

After making the second phase available, 35% of the Las Lomas apartments have been sold; they are expected to be handed over at the end of next year. Calaceite will also have an 18-hole golf course designed by Blake Stirling of Global Golf. What's more, there'll soon be a marina near to the development, already approved by the Autonomous Government of the Region of Andalusia, with 500 mooring points for lovers of the sea in Calaceite to enjoy their boats.

Grupo el Fuerte

Grupo El Fuerte is the company backing this project. The successful company has more than 50 years of experience in the tourist sector and owns six hotels in Andalusia, as well as a new 700 room project in Jamaica. Year after year, Grupo El Fuerte has won different awards and acknowledgements certifying their professionalism, quality and respect for the environment. Those purchasing at Calaceite will also benefit from services and discounts on offer from the hotel group.

24/09/2007: The project for a new Marina has been approved

The project for a new Marina has been approved

The project to create a new Marina in the area between Torrox and Nerja has been approved.
